Build your Professional Path by Visualizing How Java Evolves
Two weeks ago, I had the unique opportunity to meet the RivieraJUG community near Nice.
In a co-presentation with Bruno Souza, I shared my insights on OpenJDK, JEPs, JSRs, and, of course, the JCP process.
Understanding how they relate to each other helps explain how Java evolves and how you, as a Java developer, can follow this evolution.
Data visualization is very useful for making those connections visible and understandable. This is one of the reasons why I created the Java Universe, to explore this evolution from a fresh, unusual perspective.
I already presented J-Universe at a recent JCP EC meeting, and it also helped us navigate the topic during the RivieraJUG meeting. My main goal is to make such “dry” topics more engaging.
We also highlighted opportunities for Java developers to contribute to this evolution and how doing so can help them grow technically and become Java experts.
I’m grateful for the great conversations and questions from the audience, it was a wonderful experience.
What did I learn from this experience?
You don’t need to go to the biggest conferences to spread the word about Java and share your insights. Local JUGs are excellent places to meet people where they are and where they work. And, as always, sharing ideas broadens your own perspective as well. It also helped me learn more about the topic.
