The Java Community in Brazil

Sometimes, travel plans come together at the last minute.

You may not know your schedule in advance or be able to book everything in time. This means you need to stay flexible and be ready for the unexpected.

But this flexibility can also bring unique opportunities: meeting local developers, sharing knowledge, and learning from each other.

During my recent trip to Brazil, I had the chance to attend two Java User Group (JUG) meetups and The Developer’s Conference (TDC). Here are some impressions.

My First SouJava Meetup in São Paulo #

To begin with, I attended my very first SouJava meeting at Oracle in São Paulo.

We discussed the evolution of Java, the Java Community Process (JCP), Java’s role in the AI era, and spec-driven development.

It was a pleasure and an honour to share the stage with Heather VanCura, leader of the JCP program, and David Parry, two outstanding speakers and community builders.

I enjoyed every moment, especially the great conversations afterward. Thank you to the organizers!

Celebrating 20 Editions of The Developer’s Conference #

This year, The Developer’s Conference (TDC) celebrated its 20th edition. What started as a small event has grown into the largest developer conference in Latin America.

A special exhibition looked back at TDC’s history, with photos, stories, and even some Java souvenirs from the old days.

But what makes TDC truly special is its people. The welcoming atmosphere and the care shown to speakers and participants make a real difference.

TDC int'l track

Once again, the conference included an English-language track called “AI & Emerging Tech”, featuring international speakers: Edson Yanaga, Darío Macchi, Heather VanCura, Mete Atamel, Nyah Macklin, Bharat Ahuja, Bruno Borges, David Parry, and Otavio Santana.

I felt privileged to be among them and to have the opportunity to share my knowledge and passion.

Three days of inspiring talks, great conversations, and memorable moments passed by quickly. My thank-you goes also to the track coordinators!

The First English-Speaking SouJava Meetup in Brasília #

JUG meetup intro in Brasilia

My final stop was Brasília, where I had the privilege of joining the very first English-speaking SouJava meeting at Oracle.

Thiago Bomfim showed how to use garbage collectors in Java. I then shared how data visualization can help us explore Java’s evolution. Finally, Marco Coelho talked about his experience using Claude Code to modernize legacy projects.

It was a great opportunity to meet more members of the local Java community, exchange ideas, and learn from one another.

Many thanks to all the organizers for making it happen!

These days in Brazil were intense but rewarding. I had the chance to share my knowledge, learn from other professionals, and connect with the Java community in new ways.

By the end, I was tired but grateful for all these moments.
